GPD WIN 4 2022 Review

The GPD WIN 4 2022 Gaming Handheld PC is a powerful device inspired by the designs of the Sony PSP and Vita. Its clear shoulder buttons, D-pad, and gaming buttons, along with the hand strap hole in the corner, reflect the influences of these popular gaming consoles.

Powered by the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor and the AMD Radeon 680M GPU, the GPD WIN 4 offers a choice of 16GB or 32GB LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB or 2TB of m.2 PCIe NVMe SSD for storage. The device also supports WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 for seamless communication. Additionally, a 4G LTE module can be purchased separately to connect to the back of the handheld.

If you’re in the market for a Gaming Handheld PC, the GPD WIN 4 should definitely be on your radar. We got our hands on one and did a full review, comparing its performance to the AYANEO 2, ONEXPLAYER Mini Pro, and GPD WIN MAX 2.

Unboxing the GPD WIN 4, we found the device itself, a user guide, charger, and USB Type-C charge cable. The compact device measures around 8.6 x 3.6 x 1.1 inches (22 x 9.2 x 2.8 cm) and weighs just 598g, making it the smallest 6800U-based Gaming Handheld PC available.

The GPD WIN 4’s design is clearly inspired by the classic PSP and Vita, with a strap hole on the left, shoulder buttons from the PSP, and D-pad and buttons from the Vita. The display is a 6-inch H-IPS touchscreen with a resolution of 1920×1080, supporting 40 and 60Hz refresh rates. The screen slides up to reveal a backlit keyboard with tactile buttons, making it easier and more comfortable to type.

The device also includes standard gaming controls, additional buttons including a fingerprint scanner and optical sensor for moving the mouse cursor, a Micro SD card slot, and a switch to change between mouse and joystick modes. On the top of the device are the shoulder and trigger buttons, power and volume control buttons, a USB 4 port for connecting an external GPU, a USB 3 port, and a 3.5mm headphone port. Two custom keys on the back can be defined using the included software.

In terms of technical specifications, the GPD WIN 4 is a powerhouse. With its AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor and AMD Radeon 680M GPU, it delivers smooth, fast performance. It also offers a choice of 16GB or 32GB LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB or 2TB of m.2 PCIe NVMe SSD for storage. For communication, it supports WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, and a 4G LTE module can be added for even more connectivity options.

With a 45.62Wh battery, the GPD WIN 4 is built to last. GPD reports that it can last up to 10 hours on light use, and in our tests, we found it comparable to other handhelds like the AYANEO 2 and ONEXPLAYER Mini Pro. We also tested the device’s fan noise and temperature under full load and found it to be similar to other handhelds.

For system benchmarks, PCMark, 3DMark, Cinebench, and CrystalDiskMark were used to test the CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage across different scenarios at 28W TDP. The results showed that the PCMark score was lower than expected at 5,054, while the scores for 3DMARK, Cinebench, and CrystalDiskMark were good. The game benchmarks were conducted at three TDPs of 11W, 20W, and 28W. The screen resolution for the GPD WIN 4 is 1920×1080, which means that it runs at 720P. The game benchmarks were performed on Forza Horizon 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Cyberpunk 2077, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare II. The sweet spot for performance and power was around 25W TDP. The results of the benchmark scores were overall roughly the same across the devices, which is good to see. The performance was mostly the same as other 6800U handhelds, and similar settings were used for playing games. The GPD WIN 4 is a great handheld gaming PC for those who are looking for portability and power.
