If you’re facing difficulties updating to the latest AMD graphics drivers or encountering compatibility issues, you may need to uninstall the existing drivers before installing new ones. This guide provides an easy-to-follow process for how to uninstall and install AMD graphics drivers.
Uninstalling AMD Graphics Drivers #
AMD offers a simple tool to uninstall their old graphics drivers. You can download their Cleanup Utility software [here].
Run the AMD Cleanup Utility:
After downloading the Cleanup Utility, run the application. If prompted for Administrator rights, click YES.
Boot into Windows Safe Mode:
The Cleanup Utility will prompt you to restart your device and boot into Windows Safe Mode, where no system drivers are in use. This makes it easier to uninstall drivers. Click YES to reboot.
Uninstallation Process:
After your device reboots into Safe Mode, the Cleanup Utility will automatically start and prompt you to begin the uninstallation. Click YES to proceed.
Complete Uninstallation:
The uninstallation process may take a few minutes. Do not close the software or shut down your system during this time. Once it’s finished, click FINISH.
Reboot to Normal Windows:
You will be prompted to restart your device again. Click YES to reboot back into normal Windows. At this point, your previous graphics drivers have been successfully uninstalled.
Installing AMD Graphics Drivers #
This process will install the latest available graphics drivers for your device.
Download the Latest Drivers:
You’ll need to download the latest AMD graphics drivers. It’s recommended to use the “Auto-Detect and Install Driver Updates for AMD Radeon™ Series Graphics and Ryzen™ Chipsets” option [here], which will automatically find and install the correct drivers. If this doesn’t work, you can manually select your “Processor With Graphics” from the dropdown menus on the AMD website.
Run the Driver Installation File:
Once the driver software is downloaded, run the file to start the installation process.
Installation Path:
You may be prompted to choose an installation path. The default path is typically fine. The software will then scan your system to detect the graphics card.
Confirm Graphics Card:
The software will display the detected graphics card. In this example, the AMD Radeon 760M Graphics from the Ryzen 5 7640U was found on the GPD WIN MAX 2 2023. Click NEXT to continue.
Optional Privacy View Tool:
You’ll be given the option to install the Privacy View tool. This is optional, so decide whether you want to include it, then click NEXT.
Chipset Drivers:
You may also be prompted to install Chipset drivers. It’s recommended to install the latest versions, so select all available options and click INSTALL.
Driver Installation:
The software will now download and install the latest drivers. This process may take a few minutes depending on your internet speed. During the installation, your screen may briefly go black.
Finish or Restart:
After the installation is complete, you’ll be prompted to either Finish or Restart your device. It’s recommended to choose Restart to ensure everything is properly installed.
By following these steps, you can successfully uninstall old AMD graphics drivers and then install the latest version.
