GPD WIN MAX 3 SSD upgrade guide: installing or replacing 2280 and 2230 NVMe drives

Updated 13 October 2026 2 min read Ask a question

Want to expand the storage in your GPD WIN MAX 3 or replace an existing SSD? The device provides locations for M.2 2280 and M.2 2230 NVMe drives. This guide takes you through the essential preparation and checks, while the video shows where the drives are and how to access them.

Tools and preparation

You’ll need a Phillips 000 screwdriver and an NVMe SSD in the correct size for the location you plan to use. Tweezers can help with small screws, but they’re optional.

Before starting, back up your data. Replacing the drive that holds Windows also means you’ll need a way to restore or reinstall Windows and your files; simply fitting a blank replacement drive won’t transfer them.

Shut the GPD WIN MAX 3 down, disconnect the power adapter, remove its external battery module and allow it to cool. Work on a clear surface where you can keep track of the screws. If any part resists removal, stop and check the video rather than forcing it.

Fitting the NVMe SSD

  1. Use the video to guide you through opening the device and reaching the SSD location.
  2. Confirm whether you’re working with the M.2 2280 or M.2 2230 location, and check that your new drive is the matching size.
  3. For a replacement, undo the existing SSD’s retaining screw and gently withdraw the drive from its socket.
  4. Insert the new SSD into the connector, taking care to align it correctly. Secure it with the retaining screw without overtightening.
  5. Reassemble the GPD WIN MAX 3 as shown in the video. Check the fit of the casing before powering it on.

After installation

Replacing the 2280 Windows drive: If the new SSD is blank, you must install Windows before the GPD WIN MAX 3 can boot from it. Follow our Windows reinstallation guide for GPD devices, complete setup and restore your files from backup. A properly cloned replacement may boot without a fresh installation. Check that any installation image you use is specifically suitable for the GPD WIN MAX 3; an image for another model should not be used.

Adding a 2230 storage drive: Start Windows from the existing 2280 SSD, then open Disk Management by right-clicking the Start button. Find the new 2230 drive by its capacity, initialise it if necessary, and create and format a volume. Confirm the drive you selected before making changes.
